Using discretion and judgment, acts as the senior financial officer for MFS mutual funds, Variable Insurance Trusts I and II, Luxembourge SICAVs and other investment products (e.g., commingled products), and oversees and directs the financial administration of such.
-Ensures that the Treasury Department objectives and goals are integrated in the MFS overall business plan and represent the best interests of the funds, shareholders and other key constituencies -Communicates MFS and Fund Treasury policies to Assistant Treasurers, Accounting Managers and staff. Incorporates MFS vision into department goals and objectives. Establishes a communication process with external constituencies (e.g., Compliance, Legal, Audit Committee, Investment personnel, etc.), as appropriate. -Assures that new products or enhancements to existing products are incorporated into the department operation. Ensures that MFS operation issues are properly considered as part of the new product review process. -Directs the development, maintenance and enhancement of financial controls, including appropriate management reports, to ensure the integrity of reporting generated from the department and the custodian bank. Develops and oversees internal control systems to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, tax rules and regulations and regulatory requirements (i.e., Investment Company Act). Ensures pro-active and regular communication with "customer" groups (i.e., investment personnel, Legal Department, Compliance Department, independent accountants, MFS management, staff). Assists personnel with complex or sensitive accounting decisions or problems. -Manages and allocates new business to an Assistant Treasurer; assigns projects and allocates workloads, as appropriate. -Meets regularly with fund auditors to discuss audit and tax issues, disclosure matters, and planning for future engagements. Coordinates timing of financial statement process with fund auditors and other MFS departments. Negotiates audit fees and fees for services with independent accountants. -Provides expertise on current SEC and GAAP disclosure matters and tax distribution rules and regulations that affect investment companies and incorporate same into reports and filings. Works with industry groups to comment on proposals affecting the industry. -Reviews and approves dividend and capital gain policies, projections and declarations for funds. Reviews monthly reports of distribution and taxability of distributions, as appropriate. Assists in tax planning for various funds assuring the participation of portfolio managers.
